Klumhotel Gornergrat sits atop the Alps at a height of 3,100 meters above sea level. The clouds and stars seem almost close enough to touch at this solitary hotel. The tall and imposing brick structure is located in the valley of Gornergrat, above Zermatt, Switzerland’s highest open-air train station. There are 22 residential suites, all warm and well-furnished with the latest equipment and facilities. The sunny observatory deck is accessible all year, providing a spectacular view of the wide landscape and infinite horizon stretching as far as your eyes can see. The secluded hotel even has its own planetarium, a library, and shopping center where you can get souvenirs and keepsakes at bargain prices. The common dining space and the eating house are located on the lower floors. Isolated yet welcoming, the Klumhotel Gornergrat is the perfect retreat for romantic couples and solo travelers who are looking for an escape from their daily life into the lap of nature.
The Gornergrat is a rocky ridge on the edge of the Pennine Alps, overlooking the Gorner Glacier in the south-east of Zermatt. The Gornergrat Bahn electric railway opened sometime during 1898 taking tourists on a ride through the picturesque valleys of Zermatt covering glaciers, mountain ranges and frozen lakes on the way. The Klumhotel Gornergrat started out as a lodging space where the guests could rest for a while before continuing on their journey to Zermatt. Today, the hotel has become a part of the vacationing experience. Tourists flock towards the resort for majestic views of Matterhorn and Montblanc. Standing straight and tall at a height of 3100 meters, the Klumhotel Gornergrat catches the most gorgeous sunrise and sunset views you’ll ever have the chance of witnessing.
The stone construction is over a 100-year-old, modernized and renovated by a group of architects to give the place a more contemporary appeal. The building was constructed sometime during 1896, two years before the completion of the railway track connecting Gornergrat and Zermatt. Over the years, the hotel was renovated several times, some notable expansion projects during 1897 and 1902 being the most prominent. In 1996, the dome tower and observatory were built on the towers.
The KOSMA telescope was installed in the Southern Tower while the Gornergrat Infrared Telescope was set up in the Northern Tower.
The Klumhotel Gornergrat is the only man-made construction standing tall amidst the natural landscape. Yet, the stone building in no way mars the beauty of the place. On the contrary, the dull brownstone structure gives the place a sense of solidity and power. The structure almost camouflages with its surroundings, blends seamlessly with the rocks and mountain cliffsides nearby. The observatory deck and huge telescopes placed on the two adjacent towers are the only things that are visible from a distance.
The building was built sometime in 1896, two years before the Gornergrat Bahn railway lines were set up to connect the village to Zermatt. The hotel underwent several modifications and changes over the years, owing to its growing popularity among the tourists. Several new suites were added, the towers were constructed, and the two massive telescopes also came on much later. The observatory deck and sun terrace were incorporated a few years later in 1996. The hotel is placed in a very strategic position, it lies almost perpendicular to the frozen glaciers at a height of 3,100 meters. You get the best view of the snow-capped Alpine peaks, fluffy clouds, and the green valleys stretched before your eyes like a buffet.
Klumhotel Gornergrat doesn’t look very warm and welcoming at a glance. The huge stone structure, tall towers, and telescopes seem forbidding and cold. The building looks more like the secret headquarters of top-secret missions or an ancient gothic castle abandoned by time, forgotten by civilization. However, all these spooky and eerie thoughts fly out of the window as soon as you take a step inside the hotel.
On the inside, the Klumhotel Gornergrat looks just like any luxury five-star resort with a spacious lobby, well-kept rooms, long corridors, winding staircases and sophisticated décor. Each of the 22 suites is decorated with the most elegant wooden furnishings and electronic facilities. The plush king-sized beds have the softest linens and pillows. Other than that, each room has a cable TV that streamlines all the well-known international channels, a work desk, and a hairdryer. The bathrooms, though compact, have all the basic necessities and complimentary toiletries placed before your arrival.
The lowest section of the hotel is dedicated to the in-house restaurant and self-serving dining space featuring both local and international cuisines. The two towers and Observatory decks are open all throughout the year. Klumhotel Gornergrat also has a planetarium, a library and a sun deck within its premises, where guests can relax and spend some time away in their own company. The viewing platform and nearby tourist spots can be reached only via a train ride through Zermatt.
At Klumhotel Gornergrat, you will find yourself completely cut off from city life. The rush and chaos of urban spaces are replaced by a sense of peace and quiet that the Swiss Alps offer. Here, you can simply lounge indoors and soak up the beauty of the snowy landscape without a care in the world. You’re in the highest peak of Switzerland overlooking the green valleys, settlements, and cities that look like tiny dots from a distance. The observatory tower and the two telescopes give you a surreal view of the mountain ranges and glaciers surrounding the hotel. You can also while away your time at the in-house library and planetarium, learning more about the stars and science.
The more adventurous travelers can try snowboarding, ice skating, driving snowmobiles, hiking, and other extreme sports up in the mountains. You can even board the Gornergrat Bahn rail and take a trip to the nearby settlement of Zermatt. The Zermatt railway station is roughly 5kms away. The closest landmarks that you can visit would be the Gorner Ridge and Rote Nase that is but a kilometer away from your hotel. The nearest village is a short while away where you can experience the production and tasting of the famous Valais cheese.
