It is more of a mini condo and less of a hotel. The 120-passenger place is now a completely isolated single-suite hotel where you are not even allowed to receive family, friends or acquaintances. Read on to know more about Vliegtuigsuite Teuge and why you should plan a visit to the place.
The first thing that any tourist worries about after he/she gets off the plane is to find an appropriate accommodation. How about you stay inside the airplane?! Confused? The Vliegtuigsuite Teuge is a refurbished aircraft that was later built into a luxury hotel-cum-apartment. It is a 1960s Soviet Ilyushin 18 four-engine turboprop airliner overlooking the lush green runway of the Teuge airport set in the heart of Netherlands. The aircraft served the East German airline service Interflug before retiring as a hotel space. The hotel, though set in the center of the city is cut off from civilization.
Back when it was actually an airplane and not a hotel, the framework could accommodate 120 passengers. Now, it only houses one guest. The décor is pretty authentic and equipped with a fully-furnished cockpit, spacious bedrooms, private bathing spaces, and a kitchen. The luxury doesn’t end there – the roomy Jacuzzi, an infrared sauna, a mini-bar, a comfy lounging area and double beds s- all account for a luxurious stay.
Vliegtuigsuite Teuge has quite an interesting history. Nobody would have guessed that a beast of a machine used in the cold war era could now be seen as a place to spend your holidays. Back in the 1960s, the aircraft was in her prime working for the East German Interflug Airline services. It featured a turboprop construction typical of the Soviet airplanes of the time. During those times, the airplane was used as a government plane for DDR dogs.
After serving the Soviet army for a couple of decades, the airplane found its way to the Netherlands. Here, in the Netherlands, the Ilyushin four-engine turbo plane was painstakingly converted into a luxury suite complete with a kitchenette, a lounge, a furnished bedroom and a Jacuzzi.
History lovers would find the place especially interesting considering the rich background of the place. The architecture and décor of the airplane haven’t been tampered with much, and kept as close to the original design as practicable. Even the cockpit and propellers are made part of the suite; you’d really feel like staying inside an airplane. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fly, although during its career as a government aircraft, the Vliegtuigsuite Teuge visited Russia, Cuba, China, and Vietnam in its career.
Hotel planes are a pilot’s dream and among the first items on a traveler’s to-do list. The Vliegtuigsuite Teugein particular is just the kind of place you’d want to be at in this holiday season. The huge structure of the airplane is set against the backdrop of the clear blue skies and lush green runway of the Netherlands airport. The airplane measures about 40 meters in length and could accommodate 120 passengers. The entire structure is kept as it is, contributing to the authenticity of the ambiance. Even the huge stairway and propellers are kept intact, though just for show. The hotel is fixed on the ground and is no longer in the service with the East German Interflug Airlines.
The giant metallic structure stands out in stark contrast to the peaceful surroundings. Huge glass windows, the furnished cockpit and grey-white décor of the aircraft further add on to its elegance. The insides are equally spacious and imposing. You get a Jacuzzi, an infrared sauna room, a kitchenette, a mini-bar and double-bed rooms for housing two guests. The hotel has strict policies against entertaining the acquaintances of the inmates. And sometimes that’s a good thing! It is important to take short breaks from your monotonous routine to enjoy the bliss of your own company for a few quiet days.
If you find the external architecture of Vliegtuigsuite Teuge intriguing, the insides would leave you completely spellbound. Once you have entered through the red and white staircase, you’ll be greeted by a huge lobby and a passageway leading to the other rooms inside the suite. The décor is tasteful, minimalistic and keeping with the themes of the hotel. The lounging chairs, plush leather sofas, rounded silver tables, round glass windows and flower vases placed strategically along the corners of the rooms – all re-establish the ambiance of an airplane.
The plane measures 131 feet in length and has more than enough space for housing two guests at a time. Inside the bedroom, a warm double bed with comfortable queen-sized mattresses, stereo, a flat-screen TV, plush robes, slippers, and a plate of cookies await you. There are three flat-screen TVs and two DVD players on board. A separate shower cubicle, a Jacuzzi, and an infrared sauna room feel like heaven after a hectic day of sightseeing and adventure sports. You aren’t forced to dine on the cold-storage airplane food. The kitchenette has a well-stocked pantry, an oven, a microwave, and a refrigerator. The original cockpit remains untouched and is accessible to the inmates of the suite.
What do you usually do when you’re travelingon an airplane? You watch movies all day long, sleep in, or just watch the clouds pass by right?
